Abstract: Numerical simulation of granular material is a huge challenge in terms of simulated process time, particle numbers and particle shape. The DEM (discrete element method) implemented in a suitable environment like CUDA is already able to simulate high number of particles. In order to improve the realistic modeling of particle shapes, more complex shapes like polyhedral particles will be implemented. The presentation will focus on DEM in general, and on the coupling of DEM with computational fluid dynamics. In addition an algorithm for the contact detection of polyhedral shaped particles will be presented. [hide abstract]
